mm1:The Basics – Part 1

January 19, 2010

Hello everyone!

I am very excited as this is my very first ‘MAKEUP MONDAY’ post! As some of you may know, makeup for photos is a little different than everyday makeup.  I will explain step by step every Monday how to achieve a very natural look that compliments your own beauty without looking too made up or that the makeup has taken over your face (although sometimes that is fun, but there is always a time and place for that!)

I will start with the ‘basics’ and begin with under eye concealor.

Texture?

You may think, isn’t this just the same as all other kinds of concealor? oh no.  The skin under the eye is thinner than the skin on the rest of your face.  Putting a concealor that is too ‘cakey’ or heavy can really damage the skin around your eye and cause pre-mature wrinkles, and it will also look very unnatural and heavily ‘made up’.Try a concealor specific for under the eye that is moisturizing, light and creamy. You can get concealors that are light, but also full coverage.

Color?

To battle those blues use a ‘salmon’ (pinky/orange) toned concealor first to counteract the blue. Then use a concealor the SAME color as your skin (not lighter!) over top.  Use a concealor brush (synthetic brushes to glide creams smoother), if not use your ring finger and do a light patting motion.  It is amazing the difference you will see in using the salmon color underneath your normal color.  Good thing I haven’t been sleeping well! Perfect for this blog!

haha.. I look concerned don’t I.  Probably thinking (hopefully people read the blog and not just look at this photo and think.. her eye looks weird. haha)

(No photo shop on the face to show the makeup clearly)

Last tip and Trick!

When applying concealor under the eye do not apply right up to the lower lash line, it will only make your eyes appear smaller.  You want a little bit of your natural shadow right under the lash for a more natural look.

Happy concealing!

p.s. ANY questions on concealing your under eye leave me a comment and I’ll be happy to help if I can!

    Hi Elaine!

Great tips! I loved the advice for battling the bluishness under the eye, and as well to not apply concealer right up to the lash line for a more natural look (something I always strive to do!) Question – can you recommend any concealers that are particularly good for the under-eye area? Thanks!!!!

yay! comments and questions! LOVELY!! Keep them coming!!

Question 1 (how far to blend under-eye concealor down):

You know when you look carefully at the ‘blue’ under your eye. It is actually not entirely blue. It is just a sort of half moon shape that swoops like a J SHAPE from the inner corner of your eye. I would start in applying product ONLY in that ‘J’ area, and then use the brush or your ring finger to blend the product out to the rest of the under eye area (you want to concentrate the product on the darkest area) If you put concealor on the entire eye, and then try to blend down, it may look too heavy as well.

    Question 2 (product recommendations):

Well, unfortunately in my never ending hunt for the BEST concealors and textures etc.. I have concluded that you really get what you pay for. yikes. Which means the ones I will recommend may be quite expensive. But I wouldn’t recommend something that I only thought was ‘o.k’.. so here we go.

For the ‘salmon’ colored concealor Makeup Forever’s concealor in N15 (AWESOME for counteracting those blue hues!- this is good for light skin tones)

and then on top AMAZING concealor (yes, it is called that)- comes in a tube.
Both these products I believe you can get at Sephora, unfortunately the AMAZING concealor is ONLY sold in the southgate location (not west ed). THis concealor is pretty awesome, it is very creamy and light, HIGHLY concentrated but costs a lot, BUT you only have to use a tiny tiny amount for both eyes!
I use ‘medium beige light’. but test the product color right on your under eye first to check. (don’t try to check color on your wrist etc..it is never the right color)

Another one that is a little more affordable but just as awesome is Lise Watier’s undercover. (it comes in a pen) This is GREAT for the under eye as it is VERY moisturizing! and NEVER comes on cakey or heavy looking. I like this cause it is very close to my natural skin color. I use the color ‘neutre, but again, test it out on your under-eye for a closer match. You can get this product at any london drugs beauty counter.

    Hope that helped!

    Elaine
